Protection Relays
Communications

Protection Relays can play an important role in the
operation of electricity networks. Often data
communications links are needed between the relays and the
less latency in these links the better (quicker) the
protection works. (e.g. Mirrored Bits™ ) It is not always
possible or practical to provide line or fibre
communications for these links. Radata Systems has supplied
many radio links for this purpose. Using the Dataradio
T-Base/R in hot carrier mode, a latency of just 6ms end to
end is achievable. This is possible because the T-Base/R is
a real-time Radiomodem rather than a packet device. The
radio data rate is simply set to the desired rate, 4800,
9600 or 19k2 bps, protection relays attached via the serial
data ports the radios keyed up by asserting RTS and the
system is operational. A well engineered radio link can
provide error free data communications and hence reliable
and fast protection for the network.
